The best way to lose weight?

Have a healthier diet, exercise for several hours a week, and get enough sleep.

You might be rolling your eyes a little – if it were that easy, you’d already be doing it right?  Well, let’s go over some of the details and try to explain things so that it makes sense to you.

First, let’s look at some of the data on losing weight.  A study we looked at analyzed whether eating less or exercising was more important to lose weight.

It concluded that dietary reduction was the more effective approach, but the best was to combine it with exercise.

There, over the course of the study, men lost about 11.4% of their weight through exercise and dieting, 8.4% through dieting, and only 0.3% by exercising.

Women in that study had similar results.

As you can see, it is possible to lose a significant amount of weight – but in general, it requires changing your diet, exercising and getting enough sleep.

What kind of diet is best for losing weight?

Different people have different opinions, but one we looked at suggested that this is good.  A diet low in fat, rich in fiber, high in low energy density foods like fruits, vegetables and whole grain.  And to consume very little energy drinks.

How do I go about starting a diet?

First, you have to decide which diet you want to go with.  There are many options and some are more scientifically valid than others.  The general idea should be to reduce consumption of things that promote weight gain and increase that which doesn’t.

It might make sense to ease gradually into your diet.  Changing your entire eating habits in one step might be too much.

What about exercise?

Again, it might make sense to start small and work your way up.  Experts recommend an optimal amount of exercise that is a little intimidating – depending on who you ask, it can be as high as like 4 or 5 hours a week of exercise.  That might be a bit scary, but don’t worry!

Research indicates that even just 10 minutes of physical activity can have noticeable and meaningful benefits for mood and digestion.

So start small and work your way up.  All things take time, and just 20-30 minutes a day of exercise is probably good enough.

It might help to have a friend be a workout buddy.  Start taking a class on aerobic dance with a friend!  Or go to the gym together.

Are there other ways to lose weight?

Sure.  You may consider hiring a personal trainer.  You can be creative!  Some people even report good results from using hypnosis to lose weight.
